Birgu, also known as Vittoriosa, is a historic fortified city in Malta. It is located on the south side of the Grand Harbour in the South Eastern Region of the main island. Birgu was founded in the 10th century and is one of the three historic cities in the Grand Harbour area. It is the oldest of the three cities, the other two being Cospicua and Senglea.

Birgu was once a walled city, with its fortifications built by the Knights of St. John during their rule in the 16th century. These fortifications were later strengthened by the British during the 19th century, making Birgu one of the most impenetrable cities in the world. Its fortifications are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its streets are lined with beautiful Baroque architecture.

Birgu is a popular tourist destination in Malta. It is home to many attractions and landmarks, such as the Maritime Museum, St. Lawrence Church, Fort St. Angelo, and the Inquisitor’s Palace.
